An Educational Tour Of The Aripo Savanna

The Aripo Savanna is the largest remaining natural savanna ecosystem in Trinidad and Tobago. It’s notable as one of the few examples of savanna grassland caused by soil type instead of climate.

The savanna is home to interesting vegetation; small forests of Moriche Palms that cannot be found anywhere else in the Caribbean, two endemic plant species, and most interestingly the carnivorous sun dew plant that traps and consumes small insects.

Dan Jaggernauth from the Field Naturalists’ Club took a small group of hikers to the Aripo Savanna to educate them on some of the more unique features of this important eco-system.
