UWI Hindu Society Garba 2014

Garba refers to a folk-dance that originated in the state of Gujarat in Western India. It’s generally performed around a centrally lit lamp or a picture or statue of the Goddess Shakti. The swirling motions of the dance is brought to life by the brightly coloured clothing traditionally worn by the dancers. Another traditional Navaratri dance is the “Dandaya Raas”, Dancers use sticks and energetically whirl and move their feet and arms in a complicated, choreographed manner to the tune of the music with various rhythms. The sticks actually represent the swords of the goddess Durga, and the dance symbolizes the fight between the Goddess and Mahishasura, the mighty demon-king.
